More than 12,000 freshers are beginning their studies at the University of Debrecen as of this September. At the ceremonial senate meeting of the university on Sunday for marking the start of the new academic year, Minister for Education and Children’s Affairs Judit Lannert underlined that the future of Hungary is inseparable from the University of Debrecen, which serves as a model for other institutions of higher education in our country in so many respects. This year’s ceremony was also about honoring outstanding contributions to the reputation of our university. It was for the first time that titles of rector emeritus and decanus emeritus were conferred upon former leaders who have played a decisive part in the history of the institution.

From to, to the application of AI, digital twins, and integrated modeling to climate and air quality protection, the Participants of a two-day CITDS Information Technology and Data Science Conference, hosted by the Faculty of Informatics of the University of Debrecen were able to get familiar with numerous IT innovations, including the challenges of autonomous driving, new paradigms of artificial intelligence and the application of AI, digital twins, and integrated modeling of climate and air quality protection. Once again, the central element of the event was the interaction of artificial intelligence and various technologies.
An international symposium was held at the Faculty of Informatics at the University of Debrecen on new trends in artificial intelligence, the innovative possibilities and challenges of the technology, and the significance of industry certifications and exam opportunities available in this field. At the AIDA AICET 2026 event, experts summarized, among other topics, the impact of machine learning, large language models, and agent-based systems on science.
The 2026 course of Debrecen Summer School has come to an end, and a total of 116 certificates have been awarded by the organizers to the participants, half of whom studied Hungarian for the entire length of four weeks, while the other half took turns in staying for either the first or the second two weeks of the course. As all of them passed the final exam successfully, these language learners were satisfied and happy without exception when they returned home on August 15.
Sixty students received their certificates at the end of the second week at the Debrecen Summer University, and thirty-three new students arrived for the next session. Everyone did well on the exam, and the new students have successfully integrated into their groups, where they continue to study the Hungarian language diligently.

More than 7,800 international students will be able to pursue their studies at the University of Debrecen in the 2026–2027 academic year. According to preliminary data from the Coordinating Center for International Education (CCIE), more than 2,300 freshers will begin their studies in September in first-year programs and preparatory courses, a part of whom might arrive in Hungary as participants in the Stipendium Hungaricum program.
The Mixed Choir of the Faculty of Music of the University of Debrecen and the Bárdos Girls’ Choir have achieved yet another phenomenal international success. These two choirs were invited to perform at the China International Choral Festival (CICF) in Beijing, where they gave remarkably successful concerts in impressive and modern venues with excellent acoustic features. After Beijing, their Chinese tour continued in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province.
Almost one hundred students from a total of thirty-one different countries are going to learn about the Hungarian language and culture at this year’s Debrecen Summer School. The youngest participant is only fifteen years old, while the oldest is eighty, in a program that runs from July 20 through August 14. At the ceremonial opening held on Monday in the University Church Building, scholarship awardees also received their certificates.
